

Over the last 12 weeks, we’ve explored the good and the bad in our homes, schools, and businesses, and we’ve explored actions we can take in our everyday lives to keep childhood cancer prevention on the forefront. We’re now shifting gears to look at investments in clean business practices as a way of prevention, and finding out if it works. We know that so many companies are not held to high standards for consumers when it comes to toxic chemicals in their products, and that some of the chemicals in question are linked to childhood cancer. That being said, many companies have begun to introduce safer materials, and how feasible that transition can be. The Campaign for Healthier Solutions is a great example; this initiative switches discount retail stores’ toxic products and foods to safer, healthier, and even local products and foods. They worked with Dollar Tree stores to institute a chemical management policy, remove 17 harmful toxins from stores, and even created a restricted chemicals list. Company transformations are possible and businesses can still function like normal with safe alternatives on their shelves!
Where does that leave us? Sign petitions, talk to business owners in your communities, talk to the leaders in your communities and urge them to hold stores and companies to higher standards for our kids. Making the investment for cleaner business practices can #PreventChildhoodCancer !
Looking at company transformations like the Dollar Tree gives us hope that more businesses will take the steps to reduce toxic chemicals in their products. Businesses need to support consumers and provide products that are safe for our use! In the Campaign for Healthier Solutions, Dollar Tree joined the Chemical Footprint Project, focused on measuring businesses’ chemical footprints and managing their risks to consumers. This helps to reduce the use of toxic products even further. There are currently only 3 retail corporations part of CFP- one of them being the Dollar Tree. That’s not enough! Contact the businesses and companies that you shop at to join the project and learn how to manage their chemical footprint in their communities.
